After dinner, Caitlin took a shower and went straight to bed to rest up for the next day, leaving Finley and Nicole alone since Jackie was in her own room, on a different floor.

“Do you want to take a walk with me?” Finley asked, the thoughts that were provoked by the conversation with the odd woman on the plane, were still weighing on the back of her mind.

“Um…ok? Did you have a place in mind?” Nicole questioned, looking oddly at her.

“I was just thinking maybe out by the pool or something. You know, get some fresh air. I feel like my lungs are full of chlorine.”

Nicole chuckled and grabbed her coat. “What if she wakes up and we’re not here?”

“She’s almost sixteen. I’m sure she’ll see our stuff is still here and realize we haven’t abandoned her,” Finley said.

The air was cool and crisp, but not as cold as Charleston. Finley held Nicole’s hand as they walked down the path that led around the outdoor pool, to the gazebo on the opposite side.

“What do you want to happen when my post is up?” Finley asked, sitting down on the wooden bench as Nicole sat next to her.

“What do you mean?”

“We haven’t really talked about it.”

“I guess we’ll go wherever the Coast Guard sends you. Isn’t that how it works?”

“Well, yes. But, is being a military wife what you really want? Moving every three years?”

“Finley, where is all of this coming from?” Nicole asked, looking into her deep blue eyes.

“I’ve never asked your opinion. I always just expected you to pack up and go with me. I think that was part of our problem the first time around. I don’t want to make the same mistake twice,” Finley sighed.

“Honey, my mother was our problem, not your job. Yes, moving every three years is a hindrance, but it’s not going to keep us apart, not now, not ever again. I’ll move to the middle of the desert, and ride a camel to work, if it means I get to have you by my side as my wife.”

Finley smiled. “I love you.”

“I love you, too,” Nicole said, leaning in to kiss her softly.
